A.J. Bonar’s Golf Secret

If you watch the golf channel for more than 6 hours at a time, you’re bound to come across the “A.J. Reveals the Truth About Golf” infomercial.  You can learn the secret for about 90 bucks (or get the DVDs used for much cheaper).

Although 90 dollars is a lot to pay, A.J. has indeed learned the secret of golf: to properly control a golf shot, the clubhead must be delivered as it is turning over from closed to open.  This is why every pro seems to hit a natural draw.

The key to turning the clubface over is how your hands relate to the club.  Essentially, it is your right thumb that mirrors the openness of the clubface.  On the backswing, it must turn over to the right enough to turn back over easily as you are making contact with the ball.

I can’t nearly capture all the information in the DVDs in a single blog post, but A.J.’s findings do have merit.  It really doesn’t matter how your body turns, what plane the club travels on, or how much your head moves as long as you can deliver the clubface as it is turning over.  With this information (and the rest of the knowledge in the videos), a player can significantly improve over time without any lessons.  Hitting a golf ball in such a matter is a skill which one develops, rather than a rigid set of golf swing rules that a player must perfect.

EDIT (5/28/2010): There is much debate in the golf community about consciously rolling your hands over at impact.  Many good players and pros believe this is poor advice.  My advice: don’t change your game based my blog post, but feel free to watch the video.
