Off the wagon
I am a golf addict. If my 20+ week streak of golfing doesn’t prove it, then my top 10 Google page rank for “golf addiction” sure as hell does. One bad round toward the end of the season isn’t going to keep me away for long.
On Monday, my first round back since “quitting,” everything was consistently 20-30 yards left of my target. If I wasn’t playing a scramble, penalty strokes alone would have put me well over 90. But the ball felt pure coming off the club, which has knocked me back off the wagon.
Conceptually, I’ve figured out what was causing my ball flight on Monday — an outside-in swing path with a square club face. Keeping the clubface square, which is always a challenge, was accomplished by slightly shortening my backswing. A better swing path, I imagine, can be achieved by turning my hips properly, rather than extending my arms upward. I’ve always known that hips were key in the golf swing, but until now have never figured out why.
So here I go again, back to the range to get my swing in tune. And if I don’t get to play 18 holes for a while, I’ll be content as long as I am improving.
